What a year at Antigua Sailing Week 2018!

After 8 days of racing and Caribbean celebration Peters & May return home to a rather cloudy UK, reminiscing over all that Antigua Sailing Week 2018 had to offer.

This year we think Antigua Sailing Week kicked off in true style with the Peters & May Round Antigua Race. The 53-mile course is open to all yachts whether they were competing in Antigua Sailing Week or not; the race was a brilliant event, bringing with it a fantastic atmosphere. Scored separately from the rest of the racing; participants enjoyed friendly competition away from the pressure some of Antigua’s more intense race days hold. Fantastic winds and blazing sun created the perfect racing conditions.

Over 40 participants competed in the Peters & May Round Antigua Race across 5 classes including racing, multi-hull and bare boat. A great day’s sailing was had by all with record breaking time achieved by American modified Volvo 70 Warrior completing the course in just 3h 55 mins 38 seconds! Winners, staking their claim to their Peters & May 1st place trophies across classes included:

CSA 1: Warrior from USA (Steve & Stephen Murry Sr. & Jr.)

CSA 2: Leon from France (Peter McWhinnie)

CSA 3: TWINL – Jaws 2 from France (Frank Loubaresse)

Bareboat: ZOSCA from Canada (Kelly Wharton)

Multihull: 2 2 Tango from Antigua (Anthony McVeigh)

Peters & May also congratulate all participants who celebrated their victories in 2nd and 3rd place of classes.

Deserving a well-earned tipple, participants of the Peters & May Round Antigua Race were welcomed to toast the winners at the award ceremony held in conjunction with the official opening party of Antigua Sailing Week. Everyone enjoyed a 5-year aged English Harbour Rum, washed down with Fever Tree Ginger Beer whilst dancing the night away to the beat of our steel pan band.

Antigua Sailing Week done and dusted for another year, it’s homeward bound for many of the participants who will be joining our May sailings from the Caribbean back to Europe & North America. Last year on the return from the Caribbean, Peters & May broke one of its records with the largest number of yachts shipped on a single vessel to Southampton at a staggering 45 yachts mast up! This year many will be joining us on the voyage home, including over 10 yachts participating in Antigua Sailing Week.

Overall Antigua Sailing Week 2018 certainly did not disappoint. The numerous social events of the week offered a great opportunity for our local agents and racing experts to speak to participants and fellow yachting fanatics about any logistics requirements. As explained by Global Operations Director for Racing; Craig Stanbury: “It was fantastic to meet so many new faces this year, alongside many clients that we have worked with for years. We saw lots of interest in our annual sailings and it was great to hear more about the future racing plans of participants”.

As always, it was a pleasure to be a part of Antigua Sailing Week alongside other fellow sponsors including Fever-TreeEnglish Harbour Antigua RumAntigua and Barbuda Ministry of Tourism and Antigua Yacht Club amongst others. Peters & May look forward to seeing what next year has in store!
